the History of "Kuno-Bunko Collection"

Sekiguchi Takayoshi, the first governor of Shizuoka, wanted to see the development of the whole Japanese society after the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Therefore, he collected and stored historical materials and books to establish an Western-styled public library in Shizuoka. After his death, this precious collection was stored in the Kunozan Toshogu Shrine in Shizuoka City.

In 1924, Sekiguchi Sokichi, eldest son of Takahosyi, donated this collection to the Shizuoka Prefectural Library, and the collection was named "Kuno-Bunko". Afterwards, the Sekiguchi family donated more books and materials, from which the present "Kuno-Bunko" collection has been composed. Based on Takayoshi's sharp foresight into the new age, this collection covers various fields like history, geography, economy, and law which are beneficial for the development of society and the nation.
